In December the 7th and 8th grade took a field trip to see Charles Dickens, "A Christmas Carol". Before seeing the movie the students read the book, looked up vocabulary words from the book, discussed literary elements of the story, and answered comprehension questions. After seeing the movie the students discussed the movie producers interpretation of Charles Dickens classic story, and then wrote about how they would have interpreted the story for the big screen.
Students are currently reading the "Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy. They are enjoying learning about the Scarlet Pimpernel, the precursor to many modern day super heroes. Baroness Orczy uses descriptive language in her writing, and students are finding many similes, metaphors, allusions, and examples of personification in the story. TStudents are also expaning their knowledge of literary elements in discussions of the book.
In writing students are beginning the semester writing a short biography of a person they know. The person must be over 50 years old, and students must include a historic event that happened in the person's life time and how that event effected their lives. Last week students chose interview questions and the person they want to interview. The interview is due Friday, January 29th. We will begin the outline on Monday, February 1st.
In social studies we are just finishing a unit on the three branches of government. Students will have a test on the judicial branch of governement on Friday, January 29th.
In science we are studying earth science. Currently students are learning about ecosystems, biomes and resources.
At Hillsdale Preparatory School we have limited enrollment. If you know a 7th or 8th grader who would benefit from our small class size and the classical education provided at HPS please have them contact the front office. We would gladly welcome them into our classroom.
